Mill Valley is a small city in Marin County, California about 14 miles north of San Francisco and 52 mile drive from Napa. The population was 14 231 at the 2020 census; it's located on Richardson Bay with Mount Tamalpais as its backdrop The area has been continuously settled since 1871 when an adobe homestead became known locally for baking delicious pies using apples grown there - hence "apple valley."
Mill Valley has a warm Mediterranean climate, with rainy winters and hot summers. Winter lows seldom dip below freezing, while summer highs rarely exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with November through March receiving 90 percent of the annual rainfall. In the winter, wind speeds are lower than national averages, but in the summer, they are greater, and in the canyon areas of town, they may be fairly gusty.
Mill Valley is often affected by California coastal fog, which causes relative humidity to fluctuate greatly. During the wetter winter months, daily relative humidity is more stable, hovering about 70-90 percent (slightly higher than US averages). During the summer months, however, although morning fog maintains morning humidity average, in the 70-80 percent range, by afternoon, when the fog has burned off, humidity drops to roughly 30%, as one would anticipate in this dry season environment.
