Corte Madera's first post office opened in 1878 and closed in 1880. The Adams post office opened in 1902 and was renamed Corte Madera later that year. Jerry Adams, the town's first postmaster, was honored with the name Adams. Corte Madera was established in 1916.
Corte Madera is located on a section of the Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio, which was awarded to John Reed by Mexican Governor José Figueroa in 1834. Reed rapidly moved into the timber business, harvesting the area's vast supply of redwoods and exporting the lumber to San Francisco through Corte Madera Creek; part of this wood was used to construct the Presidio, and the town's boom proceeded.
California entered the Union in 1850, and the Gold Rush, which had been underway for a year, drew even more people to the region. By 1875, the North Pacific Coast Railroad had laid lines through Corte Madera, enabling flatcars to transport timber and, subsequently, passenger trains to transport people to and from San Francisco, with the Sausalito ferry assisting in the early phases. A handful of these commuters had a substantial impact on the development of Old Town.
